When we told the kids that Mike got a job and that we would be moving to the Washington DC area, we tried to point out all the fun new things we'd be able to see and do so that the news wouldn't be so difficult for them. I told them about the Cherry Blossoms, which are pink blossoms that bloom each spring. Well, in Erin's little mind she imagined that all the trees were pink...all the time. So she would tell her friends, "we're moving to Washington DC, and their trees are pink!!" I allowed her to continue thinking like this so that she had something to look forward too, but then had to wait until the spring time for her to finally see these beautiful pink trees.
The time of year when the trees bloom is different each year, obviously. The original prediction was for the last week of March, and so we figured Nana would arrive just afterward and miss it. However, cold weather kept pushing the date back until we were worried it wouldn't happen until after she left! We lucked out though, and the peak blooming period was April 10/11, and so we were able to see it the day before she flew home. We pulled the kids out of school for the day and went down to the Tidal Basin next to the Jefferson Memorial and enjoyed the beautiful trees for the day.
We started at the Martin Luther King Memorial, and walked about a mile toward the Jefferson on the other side of the Tidal Basin. This was actually my first time to see this monument close up
I can't even describe how beautiful it was, and the pictures don't do it justice. The trees are in several locations around DC, and the metro area, but the best spot is here. They just look like poofy pink pillowy flowers all over the place. It is seriously so magical
This pathway surrounds the Tidal Basin, and the trees are on the other side of it, but hang over, so you're walking under this canopy of pretty pink flowers hanging over you, and each time there was a little breeze, some flowers would drift off the branches around us. Simply magical

Our group. It was a really hot day - in the 90s and only the beginning of April! Everyone did great, despite it being so warm

It was fun to play around with the camera and try to capture different shots. I don't claim to be a great photographer, but it was nearly impossible to get a bad picture! It was so pretty

We had a great day, and it was so beautiful. Can't wait for next spring! :)

So glad you took the kids out of school so Erin could see her pink trees. Your photos are great but I would love to see it in person.
